Labor Rights Aspect of Female Garment Workers in the Lens of Decent Work: Bangladesh Perspective
Abstract
The study aimed to explore the role of decent work in addressing the labor rights of female garment workers in Bangladesh. This study also seeks to explore the female garment workers' attitudes towards decent work using Decent Work indicators A large number of women workers are engaged in garment industries in Bangladesh. They are vulnerable to suffering and exploitation in their work, which contradicts their labor rights. We have taken a qualitative approach to address the research questions—interview with a semi-structured questionnaire reflecting the Decent Work indicators. We have conducted a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interview (KII) in Savar Upazilla during field data collection. Based on the findings, the labor rights do not entirely express the indicators of Decent Work. The violation of Labor rights in the garment industries closes female workers' opportunities to enjoy their employment well-being. There is a vital role for the GoB, garment owners, and stakeholders in further supporting a sustainable RMG sector in which DW is a reality for all workers. Finally, this study calls for the integration of Decent Work indicators with the labor rights to ensure the well-being of female garment workers of Bangladesh.
