Job Performance of Graduates in Bangladesh: A Comparative Study between Public and Private Universities
Abstract
The study strived to investigate present job performance of graduates in Bangladesh and compare the same between public and private universities mainly based on primary data. 29 executives of 21 commercial banks and some 5 more executives of non-banking organizations were either interviewed or sent questionnaire to rate their subordinates on selected 8 criteria. Data were collected from Chittagong and Dhaka city and conclusions were drawn by using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that private universities are on the verge of filling gaps with the public ones in the case of providing quality education and producing adept employees. Claiming and deciding one side as better source, if any, of job performers depends on the criteria they are being judged, as collected data demonstrate significant difference between the two on 4 criteria (Leadership, Interpersonal, Communication and Innovation) of selected 8 whereas one does not differ significantly from another in case of the rest 4 criteria (time management, teamwork & cooperation, technical performance and passion & enthusiasm). Results also infer that employees’ performance often fails to meet demands of the jobs they are performing. Recommendations were placed to increase job performance in general and overcome prevailing shortcomings therein.
